Eduardo Padilha

Eduardo Padilha is a visual artist who works with natural and man-made materials that he manipulates and captures their transformations into sculptures, printed works on paper or fabric and occasionally moving-image. Padilha will be artist in residence throughout 2022, part of the ‘We Speak In Tongues About The Thing(s) We Love’ project by Adelaide Bannerman.

Implicitly his artworks speak about the dichotomies of the migratorial experience. The artworks manifest as proxies of Padilha’s own personal negotiations with the local communities that he is part of and interacts with, his exploration of the urban landscape and its architectures, and the private realm of his studio and home that he opens up to friends, colleagues and other residents where he lives on the Balin House estate, Southwark, through his curatorial project BalinHouseProjects (2006).

'The nature reserve will operate as an open studio that brings people together. I’m especially interested in the medicinal garden and want to learn as much as possible. I want to connect the programme at BHP and host talks about nature and wellbeing with professionals from the health and mental health sectors, writers and philosophers.

My current thoughts are on topics related to camouflage and belonging, and using techniques such as eco-printing on fabric and paper with flora provided from the site, making sculptures with materials from the site and letting the elements take over and embrace the process of rebuilding on the decay. Both approaches will touch on thoughts around identity and place.'
